SCCVC Hairdressing Photo 1

My Name is Leanne Connor and I am the Learning Facilitator for Hairdressing at Southern Cross Catholic Vocational College, Burwood Sydney Australia. We are very lucky to have a State of the art new building where students attend our College from all over Sydney. They can receive their Higher School Certificate whilst completing Vocational Courses like Hairdressing.

  1. Hello Leanne!
How does the education look like for a becoming hairdresser in australia? Do you have any kind of journeyman's certificate? When students get the opportunity to do the final examination?

  2. How many locations do you have in the hairdressing program? How many students are in each class and how many teachers are you at the program?

  3. Hi Lisa, we only have one location at the moment, with generally 20 students in the class and myself as the Teacher. We only have 1 hairdressing classroom, which limits the number of classes we can offer. Students range in age from 16-19, and some are also working in a salon two days a week. These students are School Based Appentices, and should continue with full time employment after they complete Yr 12 at school.

  4. In regards to your 1st question, there are lots of opportunities to become an apprentice hairdresser in Australia, as there is still a skill shortage in Australia. Qualified hairdressers must have a Certificate III in Hairdressing to own their own business, either as an apprentice or as part of a one year course. There are no final trade tests to get the certificate, as all tasks are competency based.
