This is how it might look when you paint a hairstyle on paper. Students often find it very difficult, therefore we practice a lot on this. This technique is used at each step in the final examination in order to become a certificated hairdresser here in Sweden.
Hello Lisa. Do you think that the contents of the final examination is relevant?
ReplyDeleteAre there many students who choose to do the test? What happens if they don´t do the test?
Hello Kristin!
ReplyDeleteSome years now, we have new rules for the final eximination here in Sweden. Now it is much more time consuming to take journeyman's certificate. Student goes through four different levels and makes a subsample after level 1, where some of the moments from the final examination is included. After level 4, the student make the final test to become a competent hairdresser. Below these levels is the student as an apprentice at the salon during the specified number of hours.
To answer your question, I think now that the rules are relevant when the market in Sweden looks like it does. We need to raise the status of the profession of which we are able to do with skilled hairdressers.
If you do not choose to go through these levels and give journeyman's certificate, you can still work as unauthorized hairdresser but with lower pay as agreed. The new agreement I write about in the beginning is designed to distinguish the qualified and unqualified hairdressers ate. I think in a few more years, demand will increase for competent hairdressers, and to those people who seeking to become hairdressers are those who actually want to become hairdressers and are prepared to go all the way.
Unfortunately there are not many students who choose to continue with level 2, 3 and 4 after basic education, but the new rules and the new upper secondary school reform from 2011 have not really had time to sit so we'll see if another few years.
Hi Lisa, what is the new upper secondary reform which you speak about here? What does this mean for the students?
ReplyDeleteThe new upper secondary school reform came through when we got a new government here in Sweden in 2011. This means that all programs at the high school is divided into pre-university or vocational program. Students who choose hairdressing program is going on a vocational program and the focus is on the student to become employable. Students did not automatically have permission to read further after his/her years in high school. Students in vocational programs can choose the "institutional package" in grades 2 to get the opportunity to read further at the university.
